This year has been defined as a season of change with my husband recently transitioning to a new career as a police officer. It’s been an interesting new dynamic for us, as we’ve had to start being more intentional about spending time together. Each day I’ve found myself either staying up late or waking early to ask him questions about how his day has been. Always feeling obligated to open up with some of the “bigger” events of his shift, I’d often stop him and ask about the smaller details of his day. His puzzled face usually indicated his confusion about why’d I’d care about such small things.
Frankly, I’ve realized it’s because I’m absolutely head over heels in love with my husband. His importance in my life is so profound that I almost thrive more on the small intimate details of his life rather than the “bigger” things that would be more obvious to the outside world. Reflecting on this recently, I’ve understood such a strong parallel this has to my relationship with the Lord. No matter how great my love is for my spouse or the love that a person has for someone significant in his/her life such as a spouse, child, or friend, this earthly love will never surpass the unimaginable love that Christ has for us. God wants to be part of every little moment of our day because He is head over heels in love with US!
“This is real love – not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins.” – 1 John 4:10
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb…You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” – Psalm 139:13, 15-16
We may often feel like it’s only the big situations of life that warrant a chat with the Lord but the reality is that God wants to hear it all. It’s in the small details that our relationship with the Lord reaches a new level of intimacy.
“Casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” – 1 Peter 5:7
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16
The enemy can be quite convincing at times that we’re not close enough or not good enough to have such casual and intimate conversations with the Lord. I don’t know about you, but I sure am glad that my closeness with Him has everything to do with His goodness and love for me and nothing to do with my works! No matter how we may feel in a circumstance, our earthly existence can’t change His mind about how He feels about us.
Sisters, I challenge you today to embrace the closeness your Father so desperately wants with you. Just as you thrive on the small details of a loved one’s life, our God delights in the intimacy of the small details we share with Him. Our God is powerful enough to handle our biggest of problems but intimate enough to hear the smallest details of our day.
“I’m an open book to you; even from a distance, you know what I’m thinking. You know when I leave and when I get back; I’m never out of your sight. You know everything I’m going to say before I start the first sentence. I look behind me and you’re there, then up ahead and you’re there too, your reassuring presence, coming and going. This is too much, too wonderful, I can’t take it all in!” – Psalm 139:5-6 The Message
Father God, I pray that each day I draw closer and closer to You. Lord, help me to see You as a loving Father with a warm embrace that equally hears the biggest and smallest parts of my day. Lord, equip me to be a vessel that shares Your love and Your promises so that others may draw close to You. Lord, I thank You for Your goodness, grace, and mercy in my life. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
