My husband and I just got back from a cabin trip and it was so very relaxing. Our cabin literally hung off the brow overlooking pastures and hills below. Every night we enjoyed the peaceful view watching the beautiful colors of the sunset fade into night as deer grazed in the fields. What a majestic and beautiful creature.
Watching those deer brought me back to a verse a friend shared on social media a few days before…
“The Lord God is my strength, and He has made my feet like hinds’ feet, And makes me walk on my high places.” Habakkuk 3:19
A hind is a female deer, red in color, whose home is the mountains. The rear feet of the hind step in the precise spot her front feet stepped; not one inch off. The hind’s focused consistency makes it the most sure-footed of all mountain animals. In times of danger she is able to run securely and not get “off track.” She can scale unusually difficult terrain and elude predators with grace and ease.
Treacherous territory isn’t always easy to overcome, but the Lord gives you strength and has set your feet like the deer. Even if you slip, with God’s help you can return to the spot from which you fell and reach greater heights than you could ever imagine alone.
“You enlarge my steps under me, and my feet have not slipped.” Psalm 18:36
“My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled.” Psalm 17:5
“Our lives are in his hands, and he keeps our feet from stumbling.” Psalm 66:9
“When you walk, your steps will not be hampered; when you run, you will not stumble.” Proverbs 4:12
“Though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the LORD upholds him with his hand.” Psalm 37:24
“The LORD sustains all who fall And raises up all who are bowed down.” Psalm 145:14
All of these verses talk about steps, slipping and stumbling. With the Lord we can be as sure-footed as the deer. For even though life’s circumstances may get us down, we do not fall because we’re grounded through salvation and have hope in the Lord. We can return to the high places to which we’re called.
I have friends with the last name “Buck.” Their moniker is no coincidence. They have endured the unimaginable but their faith and strength in God has made their path firm and they walk in the high places of their callings daily. Their resilience is a living testimony to the power of Christ.
Regardless of what you’ve been through, or are currently enduring, God has high places for you. Places where the air is pure, the view is pristine and distractions are far below. The trail may be narrow and the climb might be steep, but God is with you every step of the way. Thirst for Him and seek God in all you do. Crave God above all else and your soul will be satisfied and your path will be defined like never before.
“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Psalm 42:1
“Watch the path of your feet and all your ways will be established.” Proverbs 4:26
“In all your ways acknowledge Him and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:6
