The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the Lord,
And He delights in his way [and blesses his path].
When he falls, he will not be hurled down,
Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand and sustains him.
Psalm 37:23-24 AMP
Sitting in a large meeting at our local university I noticed several people came in late. There was a mix-up in location. The meeting was being held in a new building and many went to the former meeting space. One particular member of the group arrived well into the agenda and everyone looked up as he came in guessing what he was about to say. He, like the others, explained how he went to the former meeting space and had to walk a long way to get to our location. Putting a positive spin on the situation the leader of our group laughed and said, “You just got your steps in for the day!”
As I laughed with the group I could not help but be reminded of what God says about our steps, “The steps of a [good and righteous] man are directed and established by the Lord… “Psalm 37:23.
If I close my eyes and think about my life over the years, I can see how God was directing my steps the entire time. How certain events he perfectly lined up and I had no idea. Even when I stumbled and fell He was still there helping me get back up. Some read this verse and are probably thinking, “I’m not very good or righteous.” But the good news is because of Jesus’ sacrifice He made us good and righteous and He cares about every step we take.
No matter if there is a change in the course or the season of our lives we can rest in knowing God is there guiding us the whole time. Then He establishes our steps. According to Merriam-Webster establishing means making firm or stable and causing to grow and multiply. No matter the situation you are in, a storm or in the still of life, God is directing you, making your steps firm. He is growing them, and blessing them!
“…And He delights in his way [and blesses his path].”
The last part of this verse is so full of grace. It helps me to remember Jesus doesn’t require perfectionism. He is the only one who is perfect and because of that He holds my hand and sustains me. If we mess up or don’t get it right our great Father does what parents do best.
“And when we fall he picks us right back up. When he falls, he will not be hurled down, Because the Lord is the One who holds his hand and sustains him.” Psalm 37:24
People are watching over their steps so carefully today. Tracking every step on their watches, monitoring the number of steps on their phones, even going out of their way to get in more and more steps. Friends, as you get your steps in today invite God along on the journey. Let the Good Shepherd guide and establish you. Him watching over your steps equals blessing and a promise to hold our hand when we when fall.
“We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.” Proverbs 16:9 NLT
Jesus, Thank you that you direct my steps.
Walk with me on my journey and guide me in all my ways today. I pray for your blessing on my life. Thank you that you don’t give up on me or leave me when I fall short. Please continue to pick me up, hold my hand, and sustain me. Lord, take my life and my steps and use them for your glory.
I love you Jesus. Amen.
