A few weeks ago I was taking my little girl to a friend’s birthday party. I had never been to her house, so I was getting there with aid of my dear friend, Siri. I don’t know why I trust her so much because sometimes she leads me in the wrong direction. This was one of those times!
I knew the general direction of my friends house, but instead of going with my sense of direction and making a left turn, I listened to Siri’s commands and went on past the turn. I was then commanded to do a U-turn and go back.
I was confused so I looked around for a safe place to stop and regroup.
Then I saw Mr. James Bonner standing on the corner of the parking lot I had decided on as my safe place. I immediately knew why I was lead in that direction and I knew it was certainly not a mistake.
I only knew of Mr. Bonner through a post I had seen about him on social media. I wanted to stop and talk to him, but we were already late, so I regrouped and went on to the birthday party.
A couple of hours later, the ride home brought me back by where Mr. Bonner was and I couldn’t believe that he was STILL standing out there. I didn’t know how long he had been out there, but I did know that he had been out there on a very hot Alabama Sunday, between the hours of 2:00-4:00 p.m. My car thermometer read between 91-93 degrees. I felt strongly convicted to go and buy him a cold drink, so I drove through the drive-thru of the Bojangles that he stands in front of and I purchased a large sweet tea for myself and one for him. As I drove around to Mr. Bonner there was a couple that had stopped to talk to him in the car ahead of me and a gentleman in a car behind me that was waiting to speak to him as well.
When he walked over to my car I rolled my window down and told him that I had a cold sweet tea for him and he thanked me and told me that he had just finished the one he was holding in his hand. I thanked him for being so bold for Jesus and told him it was truly inspiring. You see what Mr. Bonner does is very simple, but so bold and powerful! He stands on the corner of a busy intersection in front of a fast food restaurant and holds up a white sign with red letters that reads…JESUS WILL SAVE YOU!
When I thanked him he simply said, “It’s Jesus.” He said, “I’m just trying to let Him use me. It’s a joy to be out here, it really is.”
As he said these things his face radiated and you could feel the joy not only in his voice, but coming from within his soul. He was so happy and excited to be out there on a sweltering hot Sunday afternoon holding a sign that says, “Jesus will save you.” He waves with excitement as people drive by honking their horns to show their support, he meets and talks with people as they stop to talk to him, and he gives out pamphlets about salvation.
You see Romans 12:6-8 says…
“We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.”
That’s great news! We each have a gift! No matter what your gift is you can use it for God’s glory.
I was so moved by Mr. Bonner, his boldness and his eagerness to let God use him no matter what the assignment is. We should all be so bold in telling others the good news, that Jesus Will Save You! Seeing Mr. Bonner out there being so bold made me question whether or not I am being bold enough for Jesus with the gifts He’s given me, after all He paid a bold price for me in a very bold way up on that cross! He gave it all and He deserves my all! I left that parking lot encouraged to be bolder for Jesus in any way possible letting nothing hold me back.
“He proclaimed the kingdom of God and taught about the Lord Jesus Christ—with all boldness and without hindrance!” Acts 28:31 | NIV
Here are just a few more scriptures that call us to be bold.
“but the righteous are as bold as a lion.” Proverbs 28:1c | NIV
“Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.” 2 Corinthians 3:12 | NIV
Are you bold for Jesus? What does that mean for you? If you stood there on the corner of that busy intersection what would your sign say?
Dear Heavenly Father,
Thank you for the privilege to boldly tell others about you. Reveal to me the gifts you’ve given me so that I may use them boldly. Show me ways that I can tell others about your goodness, with all boldness and without hindrance! May my bold stance for you draw others closer to you.
In Jesus’ precious name, Amen.
Mr. James Bonner is such a bold witness for Jesus and I know he is impacting many. If this gets to Mr. Bonner…thank you for encouraging me, thank you for your boldness, and thank you for letting God use you. He certainly is! May God bless you in your ministry.
