As a small group leader it is one of my responsibilities to pray for my group members. At the end of each group note cards get passed out for prayer requests. When asking the members to fill out the cards these instructions usually follow, “Please make sure to include something we can pray specifically for you.” How many times when we are asked for prayer request do we ask for prayers for others? Healing for our sick family member, a friend in an impossible situation, our neighbor who is trying to find a job, our children, conflicts to be settled, etc.… The focus of our requests tend to be situations and people around us. But what about you? God has called us to pray for others and stand with them during hardships, but I want to take a moment to ask you something today. What do you need prayer for? Just as God instructs us to intercede for others he also wants us to pray for ourselves. “Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew 6:11 NKJV
I’ve heard friends say they feel selfish praying for themselves but God is concerned with us. “Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens,” Psalm 68:19 NIV. He loves us and wants us to come to him with everything.
If you are like me, sometimes it’s hard to know what to pray for myself. What does God want to do in me? What area does he want me to become stronger or more refined in?
I want to keep it simple today yall. Below are 10 Scriptures and prayers that we can use to be filled and “…be strong in the Lord and his mighty power,” (Eph 6:10). Remember we need to be filled so we can pour out to others.
I want us to shut out the world and situations around us, and take time to seek God and become more like Him. It is an honor to pray for everyone that follows Craving God and I hope you don’t mind but I would like to pray for you and pray us through the rest of this post.
The Full Armor of God
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Ephesians 6:10-18 NIV
God, thank you for your armor. Help me lay down my earthly weapons like my words and put on your full armor to stand strong against the enemy. I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, and my feet planted in the gospel of peace. I take up the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. I commit to pray in all circumstances for others and myself because prayer activates your armor.
A Pure Heart
“Create in me a pure heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10 NIV
Father, you made my Spirit, Soul, and Body. I give you my heart, make it clean and pure. Make the desires of my heart the desires of yours. I desperately need your Holy Spirit. Please fill me with a fresh outpouring of your spirit.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23 NIV
Thank you God for all the good gifts of you including your Holy Spirit. I pray that you cleanse me from anything that is not of you and fill me instead with the fruits of Your Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
Renewing of our mind
“And do not be conformed to this world [any longer with its superficial values and customs], but be transformed and progressively changed [as you mature spiritually] by the renewing of your mind [focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His plan and purpose for you].” Romans 12:2 AMP
Lord, you make all things new including my thoughts and mind, thank you. I invite you in to renew my mind. Help me not to become comfortable in this world and its ways but to continually seek after you and your will.
“Kind words are like honey – sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Proverbs 16:24 NLT
Jesus, fill my heart and words with kindness. Help me speak life into everyone I come in contact with today. Provide me with opportunities to encourage others.
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ…” Philippians 1:27 NIV
Lord, no matter the circumstances, no matter what the world tells me, let me live a life that is worthy of you. Help me honor you through my actions. I pray the way I treat others is centered on my relationship with you and has little to do with what others in my life do or don’t do.
“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10 NIV
Jesus, thank you that you have come so that I may have full life. I ask that any areas the enemy is attempting to steal, kill, and destroy would be brought to light and no weapon formed against me can prosper! You bring the dead to life and I pray you would fill every area of my life with full life. My home, my children, my family, my relationships, my career, my body and emotions are yours and filled right now.
“When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Glory to him in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians 3:14-21 NLT
Jesus, from your glorious unlimited resources, empower me with inner strength through your Spirit. I ask that Christ would make his home in my heart as I trust in you and that my roots would grow deep down in your love and keep me strong. I pray I would have the power to understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep the love of Christ is. I pray I would experience the love of Christ and be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. All glory to you Lord, who is able. Please do immeasurably more than I can ask or think through your power at work within me. Glory to you in the church and in Christ Jesus through all generations forever and ever!
“Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers.” Psalm 1:1-3 NIV
God, day and night I stand on your Word. Help me to be a Psalm 1 woman (or man)! Thank you for the stories in the Bible and for speaking to me through it. Ignite a passion in my heart for your word. Help me be like a tree planted by streams of water that bears fruit in every season and whatever I do would prosper.
“You go before me and follow me. You place your hand of blessing on my head.” Psalm 139:5 NLT
Lord, I invite you into every area of my life. Thank you God that you are in every situation I face today and every place I go. I pray you go before me, follow me and place your hand of blessing on my head.
